Māpop Hotel Planned for Hull Street

We are excited to announce that we have assembled a project team to design and construct a boutique 30+ room craft beverage and food themed hotel, the Māpop, at 1129 Hull Street.

The Māpop Hotel concept is for a boutique hotel offering a clean, modern look. The hotel will offer a mix of room types on 5 floors for a total of approximately 30+ rooms. The hotel will cater to the craft food and beverage traveler.

The Māpop name is a riff on the Passionflower wildflower vine which grows naturally in the southeast and whose fruit is commonly called a Maypop. On one of our regular walks along Hull Street, we discovered passionflower vines with purple flowers and maypop fruit growing out of a cracked/crumbling sidewalk and up an old chainlink fence on a vacant lot between two abandoned buildings. We thought the name was symbolic for the area.

Church Hill Ventures’ full plan for Māpop is not only for the 5-story 30+ room hotel, but for a restaurant, a small batch brewing and winemaking operation, a rooftop bar, and a spa. If all goes as planned, the project would bring a significant number of both permanent and construction related jobs to Manchester. The project will need to go through the City of Richmond’s Plan of Development process in order to determine final details, but the preliminary plans include:

ShellCraft: ShellCraft is intended to be a small batch craft brewery and winery. The brewing operations will be located on the ground level of a new attached addition built at the rear of the existing Mechanics and Merchants Bank building at 1129 Hull St. A tasting room with a restaurant will be incorporated into the design. The plan is for beer and wine to be piped directly to the hotel’s restaurants, rooftop bars, and rooms.

Crudo: Crudo will serve raw shellfish/fish and seafood themed menu in the Italian Crudo bar style on the first floor of the existing bank.

Māpop Rooftop: The Māpop Rooftop will feature craft beer and wine piped directly from Shellcraft.

Passionflower Spa: The Passionflower Spa will be located at the ground floor of a newly constructed 3 Story building at 12 West 12th Street.

Fitness Center: The Fitness center will be located at the newly constructed 3 Story building at 12 West 12th Street.

Pool: A small pool & jacuzzi will be located at the newly constructed 3 Story building at 12 West 12th Street.

Conference Room(s): Conference rooms for the hotel will be located at the newly constructed 3 Story building at 12 West 12th Street.

Given the timeframes associated with obtaining approval for the plan of development with the city, the project will entail a multi-year planning and construction schedule. Nevertheless, the team is excited to begin that process in earnest.

  1. The north-of-the river snobs are SO conflicted.
“It’s craft beer at a boutique hotel in a historic building — YAY!”
    “But it’s … South Side — YUCK!”
“What do we do? Let’s meet at Starbucks and try to figure it out.”

  2. Awesome concept! I would have loved that building for our circus school, but well….that one is a lot of money. Would love to talk to a developer about where to put Richmonds Circus art school Host of Sparrows Aerial Dance and Circus Arts. We are squished in a very small space right now, and classes are at capacity!

  3. Great concept…somewhat concerned that the same folks are doing this as mich of the rest of the area. I worry the as goes the company, so goes the developments. That’s a good thing if the company remains strong and has adequate resources to make their visions come to life. Exciting times.
