Manchester Redevelopment Spreads to Swansboro

Richmond BizSense has been busy detailing all the work being done along Manchester’s Hull Street corridor. The coverage of Hot Diggity Donuts, the Butterbean, and a new brewpub at The Baldwin Building was featured in an in depth article: Brewpub, donut shop, market to anchor couple’s growing Manchester gamble.

But now the development is spreading south to Swansboro. BizSense covered the sale of the old marina roof (sometimes referred to as a barrel roof) Siegel’s grocery store: Hilds add beaten-down grocery to growing Southside holdings.

And just this morning, BizSense announced the sale of the old Brooks Grey Sign building to Sportscar Workshops and their move from Scotts Addition to their new Hull Street property: Classic car shop rolls across the river.

With all this positive momentum in the neighborhood, it begs the question: how far south will the trend continue? There are an enormous number of really cool buildings that are vacant and underutilized along the corridor.

Our bet is that the development trend continues much deeper into southside than anyone thought possible just a few short years ago. It will be interesting to watch it unfold.

  1. If a grocery store will appear,it likely will be an independent since it appears all the major players in the area are involved in some type of “grocery store war’ , building stores a mile or 2 away from one another…..Ellwood Thompson or somebody are you reading?.
