Civil War Mystery Photos: Manchester or Downtown Richmond? History News by Michael C. Hild - January 26, 2016January 26, 201614 So I found the Civil War photo shown above in the Library of Congress archives. It is labeled as being a photo of: “Ruins of a paper mill with water-wheel “with a summary of “Photograph of the main eastern theater of war, fallen Richmond, April-June 1865.” Further down in the description it specifically labels the subject in three parts as: United States–History–Civil War, 1861-1865. Richmond (Va.)–History–1865. United States–Virginia–Manchester. I found a different angle of the same photograph (shown below), which has a similar description but no mention of Manchester: United States–History–Civil War, 1861-1865. Richmond (Va.)–History–1865. United States–Virginia–Richmond. So what do you think History Detectives, are these Civil War photos of Manchester or downtown Richmond? Most of these 3D photos aren’t all that impressive, but this one (if you cross your eyes a little) actually has some depth! I love playing “history detective,” and the most distinctive item in the photo is in the background, a tall structure which was a paper mill http://paperindustryweb.com/origins.htm Reply
I’ve got some bad news for you though, it’s also in the background of this photo of a confederate arsenal. The original caption says Tredegar Ironworks was just to the left of it. http://rmc.library.cornell.edu/7milvol/plate91.html Reply
But here’s a photo of the Manchester navy yard in the civil war, along with a whole lot of other good stuff, in case you hadn’t seen it: http://chpn.net/news/2015/04/21/the-manchester-industrial-historical-district_41910/ Reply
