Pothole Art-Gone to Pot?

Unless you drive a hovercraft to work, you know Richmond has a major pothole problem. And if you live or work in Manchester, you experience firsthand some of the worst road maintenance the City has to offer. I know personally I’ve driven into a hole that felt like I was making my way to China!

Just recently, John Gregory with Fountainhead Properties documented the massive pothole problem in the industrial and residential areas of Manchester off Hull Street. His work was featured in a recent Style Weekly article entitled: Richmond Developer Steps Up His Quest to Fight Street Craters in Manchester. The map below shows 109 potholes in a relatively small area of Manchester!!! Come ON! Can we fill some holes over here, or what?!

109 Potholes In Just This Small Area of Manchester

So what are we to do? While we still need to demand that the City of Richmond fixes these craters, let’s have some fun and draw the much needed attention to this major problem we’re having throughout the City. Creative types in other cities have done some hilarious things with their potholes in order to turn a negative into a positive. Here are a few of our favorites.

What do you say local artists of Manchester? Want to go rogue and “fix” a pothole? Maybe then we will get some much needed attention. We will be looking to document any of your creativity if you have the inclination-hint, hint. Send your Instagram pictures to #rvapotholeart so we can keep dibs on your creativity. 😉  I particularly like this image below. Anderson’s Neck Oyster Company could fill holes for days with used oyster shells that are collected weekly. Honestly though, we would rather create oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay with our recycled shell!
