Is Wawa Coming to Swansboro/Manchester?

There has been talk that a new Wawa was coming to the southwest corner of Cowardin and Semmes Ave for at least a year now. When we stopped by the old Citgo gas station and the owner said they were out of gas and closing, that was the first sign that things might be real. The following week or so, the bulldozers moved in and demolished the old gas station. It seemed as if the rumor might be true.

But only a week later we were told the deal was off. Wawa was not coming to South Richmond.

But then just this morning Richmond BizSense is reporting that the deal may be back on again. According to BizSense: “Wawa is exploring its options to develop a new location on the site of the former Citgo gas station property at 418 Cowardin Ave. in the Southside neighborhood.”

So what do you think? Will a new Wawa be a welcome addition to Manchester/Swansboro?

  1. I’d rather see something more substantive for that highly visible and busy intersection as a gateway to southside. FYI There is a proposal to build a couple hundred town homes at the warehouse site next door and the trailer park is being cleared after the recent flooding.

  2. Lucky convenience stores were LOCALLY owned and hired the neighborhood so I don’t see why they wouldn’t be welcomed. Wawa is certainly going to hire neighborhood folks too.

  3. Wawa Corp confirmed that they are not looking, They were never serious. Can you see a 24-hr store on that corner. Wawa;s here are near Interstates and major highways. The traffic count at Cowardin and Semmes is nothing to Broad and 64 , Blvd and 64, or even Chipp and Forest Hill. This was pure spec talk by the owner to talk up the site before he relisted it for sale.
