Richmond’s Retro Climax Ginger Ale & Root Beer Re-Launched at Dogtown Brewing

Richmond’s once iconic Climax soda brand that went defunct in the 1960s has new life at Dogtown Brewing in Manchester. Dogtown’s Head Brewmaster and native Richmonder, Ben Spencer always wanted to make a handful of non-alcoholic sodas to complement the Dogtown beer line. And the relaunch of the Climax brand was already underway. So it seemed like a good opportunity to jumpstart the relaunch by using the Dogtown Brewing facility to make the Climax sodas in small batch form.

Climax’s flagship Pale Dry Ginger Ale and its Root Beer are now available exclusively at Dogtown Brewing. The team has started by focusing on experimenting with the recipes for the sodas in draft form for sale at the brewpub. For each production run, the team continues to refine the recipe/process with small tweaks. The potential for a bottled or canned product is still being evaluated.

Climax originally planned to launch at the Siegel’s development in Swansboro as part of a mixed use development that was heavily themed toward food and beverage. But the re-zoning for Hull Street in Swansboro has languished amongst other high priorities at City Hall. While an expanded production facility focusing on bottled/canned product and a more extensive line of beverages is still in the works at Siegel’s (subject to the rezoning being completed by City Hall and approved by City Council), the team didn’t want to wait any longer to make progress on the Climax branding and recipes. Hence the accelerated launch at Dogtown Brewing.

Both the Climax Pale Dry Ginger Ale and Root Beer are now available for sale at Dogtown’s first floor beer hall and rooftop bar.
