Great story. Just a correction – Union troops didn’t sack Richmond. The Fire was set by Confederates when they evacuated. Reply
Jean, yes we agree. Mark Holmberg actually clarified on a separate FB post about this story when someone made a similar comment about the Confederate troops burned the bridge, not the Union Troops. Here is what Mark said: “…very true. They blew it to keep the Yankees on the other side of the river. But that sentence is worded carefully to reflect that it happened during the sacking.” Reply
The Dogtown Dish. Well, if you consider restoring order “sacking,” you could say the Union sacked Richmond. And I believe the Confederates troops were well and truly gone by the time the Union troops entered the city. Reply
